Mulching tips

Adding mulch is one of the best practices to improve the look and health of your trees. It provides an attractive ground cover and retains soil moisture for tree roots. Also, as mulch decomposes, it improves soil conditions. However, mulch is only effective when done properly. Improper mulching can actually cause long-term damage to trees.

Use these tips for applying mulch properly to your trees:

  1. 1.Apply mulch out to the edge of the tree’s canopy (or out as far as possible).
  2. 2.Apply mulch only 2-4 inches deep. Mulch that is too deep can suffocate tree roots.
  3. 3.DO NOT place mulch in direct contact with the trunk of the tree. This can cause rotting of the bark.

By following these simple tips, mulch will look great around your trees and benefit their health.
